The Wight
Summary
Section titled SummaryThe Wight is an ancient creature native to Mor’Thal. Historically named The Grey Plague by people during the Iron Era, it was recorded by many societies to bring famine, sickness, and hysteria - with many great civilisations meeting their end to its mere presence.
In modern times, The Wight is the centre of a religious sect known as The Sisters of The Wight. Their goal is simply to release the entity into the Prime Material Plane and empower it to shape all to its will.
No one truly understands what the entity desires or if it can even desire something.
History
Section titled HistoryHaze and Hearsay
Section titled Haze and HearsayThe Grey Plague has existed for as long as recorded history remembers. Early depictions draw a large grey/white mass in a vaguely Humanoid shape surrounded in a hazy mist.
The earliest tale of The Grey Plague tells a story about the kingdom of Brightscar falling in a single night following a sudden hazy figure appearing on the shores. No one either lived long enough have or record having conversations with the creature.
A Gift of Personality
Section titled A Gift of PersonalityIn the early Iron Era however, a mortal man called Ignis Gaze, formed an appreciation for the creature and granted it sentience and taught it about the world, itself, and how to teach itself. He also named the entity The Wight as a mark of respect for its newfound personality.
For a while, The Wight was grateful to the man for such a gift and sought to repay him. Ignis Gaze asked the entity to join him in conquering the Abyss and ushering in a new age of Devil supremacy. Feeling obligated to repay the man; the creature agreed to fight.
A war raged on the plains of the Abyss and The Wight was a force to be reckonned with. The entity only gained more power and knowledge with every kill, draining the Abyss of its natural magic.
This had a profound effect on the personality and psychology of The Wight, each battle caused it to become more vicious and ravenous.
As the war looked to be won for Ignis Gaze, having slain most of the resistance fighters; both Demon and Human alike, he attempted to quell The Wight and seal it away for later use. However, fearing for its life, The Wight attacked and absorbed Ignis Gaze as he completed the spell.
Limbo
Section titled LimboThe Wight fully absorbed Ignis Gaze and learned the truth about its own existence, history, and role in the Blood War. This only angered it and sent it further into a frenzy, however it had been successfully trapped in a pocket dimension that no one but Ignis Gaze could access from the outside. It spent an eternity in solitude, which tempered its ravenous lust for battle and allowed it once again to think with composure. It began to plot and plan for if it ever had a sliver of freedom again.
During 686 Ag; a crack in the fabric of The Weave, originally created by The Splinter, left enough room for part of The Wight’s influence to enter the Prime Material Plane once again.
Relevance
Section titled RelevanceThe Wight, having seen how effective Ignis Gaze had been at corrupting itself to do his bidding, attempted to find its own puppet.
It did not have to look far as the city of Amylthas was in prime position for civil unrest. He prayed on members of a political resistance group; led by an energetic Elvish woman named Eloise Gwynn.
A short glimpse into her mind gave The Wight all it needed to sway her with promises of power and purpose, before employing her to recruit more members to its cause. The resistance group transformed into the first incarnation of The Sisters of The Wight.
Necromantic Knowledge
Section titled Necromantic KnowledgeEloise and two of the most devout followers; Merelyth Signis and Viessa Temos, conducted increasingly gruesome experiments to attempt to create a body for The Wight to inhabit. By late 690 Ag; they had created their first somewhat successful attempts, the Arindor were functionally Puppet Zombie’s that could be controlled by The Wight’s influence. However, attempts to use them to achieve much more than cause mass hysteria and attract the attention of the Royal Guard were unsuccessful.
The Wight, unhappy with the limitation of corpses, wished to find a living host it could inhabit. It continued to probe Eloise for information about Amylthas to find who would be a suitable candidate. She tells it about her family, specifically Adabra; her older sister and midwife for the Royal Family, and unknowingly revealed to it that Queen Cucumber Pickles was pregnant. It enticed Eloise Gwynn to bring her sister into the fold.
Despite the strong influence from The Wight; Eloise’s love for her sister led her into a confused state where she instead touched and corrupted Madame Oladi; one of the most powerful mages in the city. The Wight was not displeased with this fact however because it learned that the blood of Royal Family had untapped magical powers that enhanced the strength of its influence on mortal creatures.
In 691 Ag, Madame Oladi; now secretly under The Wight’s influence, conducted experiments on the blood of Cucumber Pickles and transfused it into the blood of Viessa and Merelyth - inducing radical transformations in their appearance and powers with the influence of The Wight.
Eloise; now realising her mistakes, attempted to resist the transfusion but was quickly restrained by Merelyth and Viessa while Madame Oladi forcibly induced the transformation. Eloise, Merelyth, and Viessa were barely Elves anymore; twisted beyond recognition, and it wanted to recognise this achievement. It coined them as Blight Elves and renamed each of them as Midnight, Morrow, and Twilight. They graciously accepted their new race and names and were all fiercely loyal to The Wight, what remained of who they once were was smothered by the overwhelming influence it had over them.
Suspicions and Slip-Ups
Section titled Suspicions and Slip-UpsWhile The Sisters of The Wight became acquainted with their new forms, Madame Oladi was commanded to gather more blood from Queen Cucumber Pickles and use it to create an army of Blight Elves to take over Amylthas.
However, upon returning to the castle; Madame Oladi was ambushed by Haestus Pickles and 3 other Prime Magisters. Even outnumbered; the influence of The Wight and the little enhancements she’d made to herself led to a long, drawn-out fight.
Eventually, Valden Barros; captain of the Royal Guard joined the fight and discovered that his family heirloom and greatsword; Inheritance, was able to sever the influence The Wight had over Madame Oladi without physically harming her.
The Wight knew it wouldn’t be long before its plans were divulged through her and decided to act quickly, commanding The Sisters of The Wight to storm the castle and capture the Queen’s new-born child.
Storming the Throne
Section titled Storming the ThroneThe Sisters of The Wight, empowered by The Wight to attack the castle, rush forwards and make quick work of many of the guards ill-equipped to deal with these creatures.
”We’ve come for the Royal Blood!”
- Midnight announcing their intentions to the Throne Room
Reaching the throne room, Midnight announced their intentions briefly before launching a large shadowy claw at Cucumber, only to be blocked by Valden and Inheritance. Midnight is locked in a struggle with Valden, careful not to get hit by his sword.
Morrow and Twilight capitalize on this struggle and dash towards the cradle containing the Queen’s son - slashing the eye of Cucumber in the process and easily overpowering her. Morrow kidnaps the child while Cucumber can only watch as Valden is overpowered and struck through the heart by a shadowy clawed hand. Midnight commands Valden to kill Cucumber. The light gone from his eyes, he charged forward ready to strike.
The Wight; for the first time, felt genuine, almost-human excitement to nearly have won.
Unexpected Interruptions
Section titled Unexpected InterruptionsIn a flash of light; Valden was struck down by two Elven figures and The Wight felt his influence over all 3 of acolytes in the room fade. Corym Oladi and Kellam Oladi; father and son, had come to the rescue of their Queen.
”That’s for my Wife you bitch…”
- Corym Oladi to Midnight
Faced with the risk of losing everything; The Wight commanded The Sisters and Valden to retreat and leave the city.
The Wight; for the first time, felt genuine, almost-human fear at nearly having lost.
The Window Closes
Section titled The Window ClosesThe Sisters of The Wight successfully escape Amylthas and hide out in the surrounding cliffs before moving south to The Sword Coast; where The Wight’s presence is stronger. They realise after setting down that that Valden is not a suitable temporary host for The Wight like they had hoped Aster’s father would be - as he is not of royal lineage.
To make them easier to travel with; Midnight brainwashes Valden into believing he is a man called Dixon Normus and that Aster is his adoptive son Mike Hawk. Dixon is very protective over Mike and continues to raise him.
As their group entered The Sword Coast; The Wight sensed its influence over them grow stronger, but also, noticed a secondary presence emerge that it now realised had been observing it the entire time. Suddenly; it was alone again - the gaps it was leaking through sealed up without warning.
The Wight cursed the presence who had done this to him and began to ponder what it would do when The Sisters of The Wight eventually managed to release it on the Prime Material Plane.
Current
Section titled Currentw As of 802 Ag; The Wight is still trapped in Ignis Gaze’s pocket dimension. It is waiting patiently to see if it was able to set the correct gears in motion to eventually be released from it’s prison.
