Structure and Politics
Section titled Structure and PoliticsPre-Ruining
Section titled Pre-RuiningDuring the long reign of the Alagondar Family; Neverwinter was run by the Monarchy with the support of 6 other Noble Families. These families were integrated into the upper-echelons of the city and controlled everything from Arts and culture, to Finance, and even City planning. Soren Alagondar was the last King of the city during this time.
While the Alagondar Family had the most power and therefore largest say; multiple other Noble Families could stand united to get their voices heard. In reality, this only ever happened twice.
Geography
Section titled GeographyThe city was built on the West coast of the continent of Edon, specifically on a sturdy column of continental rock located in the middle of an overpass that covered what had been a river decades ago before it dried up. Large, granite walls were built on the edge of this column and the inner section was used for “high-society” activities that required sturdy ground - politics, business, education, etc. Agricultural activities were placed outside the walls to take advantage of the fertile soil and to keep the city cleaner.
Noble Families
Section titled Noble FamiliesIncluding the Alagondar Family, there were 7 Noble Families of Neverwinter. Each of these families were identified by a crest of an animal.
The Royal Lion: Monarchical family - ruled the politics and day-to-day affairs of the city when they were in power.
The Green Frog: A family who specialised in brewing potions and cursing ailments. They advised the Alagondar Family on illnesses and provided general healthcare to the entire city.

The Brown Bear: Handlers of the agricultural of Neverwinter - they ran all the farms on the outer region of the city. They also ran one of the largest inns in the city; the Hibernation Hotel.
The Grey Wolf: Charged with the external operations of the city - including hunting of game and new livestock, meeting foreign diplomats, etc - and handling internal defences including protection of the Alagondar Family.
The Blue Snake: The financiers, accountants, tellers, and traders of Neverwinter, they controlled much of the cities wealth and spending - including any gambling operations.
The White Owl: The librarians, historians, and record-keepers of the city. They track the vast and storied events of the city. They frequently traded resources with the Magus Family for the benefit of the city.

Post-Ruining
Section titled Post-RuiningSince Dagult Neverember’s rise-to-power in 786 Ag, his word has pretty much gone unchallenged. Many of the Noble Families were dissolved or absorbed into the throne in the first 5 years of his rule.
Sometime in 791 Ag; a resistance group called the Alagondar Trust arose voicing the concerns with his rule.
Geography
Section titled GeographyFollowing The Ruining, the external section of the city had fallen away into the now ravaging rapids beneath the city leaving only the central column intact. Since Dagult’s takeover as Lord Protector, the city has constructed 6 bridges; 3 the South and 3 to the North, that would reconnect Neverwinter to the mainland again.
Dissolution of the Noble Families
Section titled Dissolution of the Noble FamiliesAfter the city was connected to the mainland and Dagult had won the support of the people, he began to force the Noble Families out of the city or out of their power.
The Ursino Family were the first to relent as they had lost most of their resources during The Ruining and spent much of their remaining stocks feeding those in need during the construction of the bridges. While they retained control of the Hibernation Hotel, it became closely guarded by the City Watch from that point onward.
The Cillian Family were the next to be ousted and fled to the criminal underground in order to survive.
The remaining houses; in an attempt to keep their status, pledged full allegiance to Dagult and began to aid his endeavours. It became common knowledge at this time that the Fontaine Family had developed a truth-telling serum for Dagult and their reputation was tarnished, leading them to leave the city as well.
Many of the Noble Families’s front-facing operations; Hibernation Hotel, Magus University, Starling Library, etc…, were still charged to their respective families but now kept closely watched by City Watch.
City Watch
Section titled City WatchDagult’s personal armed forces that employed people who wanted a better life than the Noble Families could offer them.
